About the Chancellor

Chancellor Crabtree

Dr. Loren Crabtree serves as chancellor of UT’s largest campus in Knoxville. The flagship, research-intensive university serves more than 26,000 students. Dr. Crabtree joined UT as provost in 2001 and was named chancellor in 2003. The university has since evolved significantly in academic and research initiatives.

UT recently admitted the most academically qualified and ethnically diverse class in its history, with an average high school GPA of 3.6 and an ACT score of 25.8. With rising demand and growth in enrollment, Dr. Crabtree has worked to reallocate resources to infuse more dollars into new faculty positions and enhance teaching and academic programs.

Through the university’s recent reaccreditation, he’s led a team to infuse inter-cultural and international awareness into every aspect of the student experience.

The Knoxville campus also saw a record setting year for research dollars – bringing $130 million in total awards– the largest in its history. These and other efforts have helped to significantly raise UT’s profile and led U.S. News and World Report to rank it among the Top 40 public research universities in the nation.

Crabtree holds a Ph.D. in history from the University of Minnesota and is a scholar of China. He served as a faculty member, dean of liberal arts, and provost at Colorado State University prior to coming to Knoxville.
